Two brothers, both members of a criminal gang, have been arrested for their involvement in firing at and assaulting a police patrol in Narela, police said on Tuesday.

A constable sustained gunshot wounds in his stomach, while a head constable suffered head injuries after being hit with iron rods and sticks.

Sunil Pal Singh, 28, and his 22-year-old brother Shailender, who hail from Uttar Pradesh’s Kanshiram Nagar district, were held after a tip-off on Monday. Police had earlier announced a reward of Rs 50,000 on information leading to their arrest.

According to S B S Tyagi, deputy commissioner of police (crime and railways), policemen from Narela police station were on patrol on the night of December 31 when they were attacked.

“At 2 am, the team noticed some 15 suspicious persons standing near Narela L-Block. The team asked their identity, but they did not respond and opened fire. Constable Mahender was hit in the stomach,” Tyagi said.

The gang assaulted other members of the patrol with iron rods and wooden sticks, due to which head constable Omprakash received head injuries. “We also fired in self-defence, which forced the dacoits to flee towards Narela Industrial Area,” Tyagi added.

A case was lodged with Shahbad Dairy police station, and seven persons were arrested. On Monday, information was received that two members of the gang would come near Patiyali town in Kanshiram Nagar. A trap was laid, and they were apprehended.
