Revealing clothes provoke men, says Maathe

Religious leader Maathe Mahadevi, working president of the Basavadharma Peetha in Koodalasangama, has joined the legion of personalities making controversial statements following the gangrape of a student in New Delhi.

She told a press conference in the town on Wednesday that society should ensure girls do not wear revealing dresses which provoke men. Girls should wear “honourable” clothes, instead of aping Western culture.

She said women should desist from going out late in the night. They should learn martial arts like karate to protect themselves, she said.

The seer said cinemas and TV serials were the major cause for increasing incidents of rape and murder.

She has, however, opposed the statement by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat that women should stay put in the house and not go out to work.

“The Shivasharanas had advocated social, religious, economic and political freedom for women as early as 12th century. Women are not objects of desire and machines for reproduction. They have equal rights and freedom as men,” Maathe said.
