Swami Vivekananda remembered

The 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda was celebrated with honour and traditional fervour all over the state.

The celebrations started early in the morning in his ancestral house at Shimla street, where people from all walks of life assembled to pay homage. People mostly students with tableau depicting his teachings and colourful processions wound their way through the city’s streets.

 Governor M K Narayanan paid floral tributes to Vivekananda while former governor of West Bengal Gopal Krishna Gandhi paid tribute to this great spiritual leader at his ancestral home. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee inaugurated World Youth Festival at Salt Lake Stadium as a part of the Vivek festival which the state government has been organising throughout the year.

Speaking on the occasion Banerjee asked the youth of the society to come forward and actively participate in building a new country. “Be honest and don’t bow down to the evils of the society,” she said. West Bengal governor was also present on the occasion. Following a declaration by the central government, January 12 is celebrated as the National Youth Day in the entire country.

 The city’s Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture launched a unique mobile tableau named "Shashwata Bharat".
