'Nominations to BU Syndicate illegal'

Last Updated 13 January 2013, 20:17 IST

The Students Federation of India (SFI) and the Dalit Students Federation (DSF) on Sunday alleged that nomination of some members to the Bangalore University Syndicate is illegal.

Jagdeesh Prasad and D S Krishna were nominated to the Syndicate as per the provision provided in Chapter IV28 (g) of the Karnataka State Universities Act, 2000 that allows the government to nominate six members from among eminent educationists. Rajgopal, DSF president, told mediapersons that Krishna is a PhD scholar and gave his National Eligibility Test recently, while Jagdish Prasad is a lawyer.

“How can they qualify as members of the Syndicate under the category of eminent educationists?” he said.
A Syndicate member said that the particular clause in the Karnataka State Universities’s Act, 2000 has been misused. “The term eminent educationist is not clearly defined in the clause. M S Thimmappa, during his tenure as the vice chancellor, rejected six such questionable nominations,” said the member.
