Railways to better ticketing system

Last Updated 14 January 2013, 20:08 IST

The Railways is all set to increase the capacity of its computer server to produce 65,000 tickets in an hour from the present 45,000. The increased capacity will save the server from crashes that have been plaguing the system recently.

Giving details of the project an IRCTC (Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation) official said: “At the moment, we have a maximum capacity of producing around 45,000 tickets in an hour. However, this is not sufficient to fulfil our needs. We face huge rush during the opening one hour period for tatkal tickets from 10 am to 11am which leads to a server crash.”

To save the system, the Railways is replacing the dual (double) core server by hexa (six) core server. The capability of fireball (gateway software) is also being increased to accommodate more hits at a time. At the moment, due to low capacity, increased number of hits causes the server to crash.

“At the moment, IRCTC produces 4.30 lakh tickets a day, on an average. We are working on increasing the capacity,” said spokesperson of IRCTC Pradip Kundu. The IRCTC is spending Rs 10 crore for ushering in changes to the ticketing system.
