Assam’s Mainaw Narzary pocketed the recurve girls’ 60 and 40-metre gold medals on the second day of the 33rd National Sub-junior archery championships at the Sree Kanteerava stadium here on Thursday.

The 18-year-old Narzary claimed the 60M gold with a score of 321 while Karnataka’s Monisha V Shankar took silver with a tally of 305 and Khoshelu Sakhamo of Nagaland settled for the bronze after finishing on the same score.

Shankar sealed the second place as she had nine tens and X’s while Sakhamo missed out as she could shoot only seven tens and X’s. The Karnataka girl was elated with her silver medal winning performance.

In the 50M event, Himani Boro made it a memorable day for the Assam contingent as she grabbed the gold with a score of 327. Punjab’s Prabjot Kaur got the silver medal with a score of 323 and Assam’s Narzary added another medal, a bronze, with 318 points.

In the boys section, Meghalaya’s Kitboklang Pasi clinched the recurve 70M gold scoring 326 points. Ranjit Naik of Odisha took silver a point behind while Assam’s Swmla Boro won bronze with a total 324 points.

Athletes upset

Lack of training facilities for athletes in the city came to the fore once again on Thursday, with archery meet hampering their practice schedule.

The athletes complained that the event was spilling into their training time, while the archers, oblivious of it all, had an enjoyable time competing for medals in the National meet. About 500 archers from across the country are competing in the event.

“We have the all-India inter-university competition coming up and the athletes are training hard for it. They have no other place to train in the city. If the archery event gets over on time, it will help us and both the sports will benefit,” said one of the coaches.
