Construction worker killed in mudslide

A worker died on the spot after he was trapped under a mound of mud at a construction site in VV Puram Saturday evening.

George, 41, a resident of Goripalya and a bar bender, and three other workers were erecting a support wall using iron rods in a 27-ft-deep pit dug up for the construction of a high-rise apartment, when the accident occurred, police said.

Anthony, a co-worker, told Deccan Herald, “A building adjacent to the basement pit was demolished  Friday afternoon using an excavator and the mud in the pit had become loose.

So, we climbed down the pit and were trying to build a support wall with iron rods to hold the mud. But as we were laying the rods, a portion of the wall under which George was working collapsed on him. A cement block kept at the mouth of the pit also fell on his head killing him on the spot.”

George’s body was later retrieved and shifted to KIMS Hospital for autopsy. The Central Police have registered a case of negligence against the owner of the building, Nataraj, and contractor Paramount Structural Consultants, Ganganagar. Both are absconding.

Krishna, a co-worker and close friend of George, said Nataraj and the chief engineer of the building were at the site guiding them to lay the safety wall in the pit.

“But by the time we could recover George’s body, they had vanished,” he said.
George was married to Kamala Mary, 37, and the couple have four daughters. He was the sole bread winner of the family.
