Govt to open 8 residential schools

To provide education to SC/ST, OBC students in English medium

The State Cabinet on Saturday gave its nod to establish eight English medium Atal Behari Vajpayee Model Residential Schools to give a boost to the education of Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes (OBCs) students from the next academic year.

Briefing reporters after the Cabinet meeting, Law Minister Suresh Kumar said students can enrol in these schools from sixth standard and continue up to the II PU level.

The medium of instruction will be English.Each school will have total of 520 students with 50 per cent reservation for SCs and 25 per cent reservation for STs/ OBCs.

In each of these categories, 50 per cent of the seats will be reserved for girls. Each school will have a sprawling campus of 20 acres.

Kumar said two schools in each of the four revenue divisions will be established from the next academic year.
The schools will be set up in Pavagada (Tumkur district), Bangarpet (Kolar district), Chikmagalur town in Chikmagalur, Varuni (Mysore district), Mudhol (Bagalkot district), Shiggaon (Haveri district), Gulbarga Rural (Gulbarga district) and Yadgir in Yadgir district.

The schools will be run by the Social Welfare department.
In another decision, the Cabinet decided to start three additional Moraji Desai residential schools, seven additional Kittur Rani Chennamma residential schools and two residential pre-university colleges from the next academic year. The medium of instruction in these schools too will be English.

Cauvery Tribunal award

The Cabinet decided to convey to the Centre its stand that it should not notify the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal as several civil appeals regarding the award were pending before the Supreme Court.

Kumar said Water Resources Minister Basavaraj Bommai had made a presentation in the Cabinet on the various aspects of the award and why it should not be notified at this stage.

Kumar also pointed out that the Law Ministry, on an earlier occasion, had advised the Centre that it was not appropriate to notify the final award as civil appeals were pending before the apex court. Besides clarification applications filed by the riparian states were before the Tribunal. Kumar said the State government would send the Cabinet resolution to the Centre.

Youth policy

The Cabinet gave its in-principle approval to the State youth policy, which was unveiled last August. The  policy proposes the setting up of youth groups in every locality for monitoring the implementation of youth-related programmes and schemes of the government. It also proposes a host of schemes and programmes for the empowerment of youth.

City civil court

The Cabinet also approved the construction of fifth and sixth floors on the City civil court complex in Bangalore at a cost of Rs 13.7 crore.
