'Rahul not the solution'

Last Updated 20 January 2013, 19:59 IST

BJP senior leader Arun Jaitley on Sunday ridiculed the Congress party for projecting the appointment of Rahul Gandhi as the vice president as a panacea for all the problems plaguing the country and thus converting the largest democratic country in the world into “dynastic democracy”.

While inaugurating a convention by the advocates’ cell of the Karnataka unit of the BJP in Bangalore, Jaitely, a known orator, did not find it tough to get words to lambast the Congress party for promoting Rahul to Number 2 position. However, he did not mention Rahul’s name.

The BJP leader said only proven ability of a person can make him emerge as a leader. But in case of Rahul, his actual potential is not known and still he is appointed the vice president. Barack Obama became president of the US not because of his caste, surname or family background but because he created an impact on his country.

It is a tragedy of Indian politics that ideologies, capabilities take a back seat and charisma of families takes centre stage. Mere inheritance to occupy prime positions is a feature of feudal society. But such phenomenon is common from Jammu & Kashmir to Tamil Nadu, he pointed out.

Unlike many political parties in the country, the BJP and the Left Parties have structured forms where leaders emerge with their proven ability.

The party has a galaxy of leaders such as Narendra Modi, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Rana Singh and Jagadish Shettar and one among them, a politically and time tested person, will emerge as the leader. Family inheritance has no place in democracy.
