Centre to raise age-limit for child labour to 18 years

The Centre is considering raising the lower age-limit for employing child labour from 14 to 18 years.

Disclosing this here on Monday, Union Minister of State for Labour Kodikunnil Suresh said necessary amendments to the Child Protection Act would be piloted in the next session of Parliament.

Addressing the media after a review meeting on the functioning of the offices of the Central Labour Commissioner and other offices under the Labour Ministry in Tamil Nadu, the Union Minister said the proposed medical college by the Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC), at K K Nagar in Chennai, would start functioning from March 2013.

The Ministry was spending Rs 480 crore on starting the new medical college.
