An off-duty Delhi Police assistant sub-inspector has alleged that he was beaten up and his uniform torn by Haryana Roadways staff when he objected to abusive behaviour in a moving bus.

The driver and conductor of the bus have been arrested, police said on Wednesday.
Suresh Chand, 51, posted with Jahangirpuri police station, said the incident
happened when he was on his way to report to duty on Monday morning. Police said Suresh had boarded a Haryana Roadways bus from Peeragarhi at 8.15 am.

“Chand alleged that in seeing him in uniform, the staff of the Haryana Roadways bus started discussing about police using abusive language. When Suresh objected to their behaviour, they began to abuse him as well,” said a police officer.

According to Chand, he called the police control room and told the driver to stop on the bypass road. But the driver and the conductor refused to let Chand alight from the vehicle.

He was taken to Haryana Roadways’ depot at Kingsway Camp and beaten up. Chand managed to capture a video clip of the accused on his cellphone, which was deleted by them.

In his statement to police, Chand said he was held captive in the depot and the accused tore his uniform. “They threatened him and released him after he raised an alarm, and other staff of the depot interfered,” the officer added.

A local police team came to Suresh’s rescue and took him to Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries. Then a case was filed with Mukherjee Nagar police station.

Bus driver Randhir and conductor Ashok, both residents of Hissar, were arrested subsequently. They face charges under sections 506 (criminal intimidation), 323 (causing hurt) and 342 (wrongful confinement) of the Indian Penal Code.
