Salim Khan demands Rs 6 cr from makers of 'Zanjeer'

Mumbai, Jan 24, 2013 (PTI)

The remake of Amitabh Bachchan starrer 'Zanjeer' has landed in a controversy yet again as the original writer, Salim Khan, has demanded Rs six crore as compensation since the makers did not take his permission before going ahead with the movie.

Salim Khan had co-written the screenplay and dialogues for the 1973 original film 'Zanjeer'.

The remake version had been in controversy over the copyright and royalty issue.
"I have demanded Rs six crore as compensation, since as writers of the film we had the rights over the script. They are using our script and did not negotiate or felt like talking to us before going ahead with the making of the film," Salim told PTI.

Khan has demanded Rs three crore for Hindi release and Rs three crore for the Telugu version.

"Even before they started shooting for the film, we were in talks with the makers but they did not bother to enter into any dialogue," Khan said.

Khan has taken up the case with the scriptwriters association.

The remake version is produced by Amit Mehra, son of Prakash Mehra, the producer and director of the original film.

"It is not an emotional matter...that someone wants to make his father's film again. We are not against anyone for remaking the film...we just want them to take permission from us. We had given the rights for the remake version of 'Don'," Khan said.

The remake version, directed by Apoorva Lakhia, stars Telugu megastar Chiranjeevi's son Ram Charan Teja and Priyanka chopra. Ram would step in Big B's role and Priyanka will reprise Jaya Bachchan's role.

The film will release this year.
