JOIN USThree persons were killed and several others injured in two bombings today in an area of the southern Pakistani port city of Karachi that has witnessed a string of terror attacks.
Two persons, including a policeman, were injured when unidentified attackers targeted a police van with a low intensity explosive device in Sohrab Goth area of Karachi this evening. A short while later, a powerful bomb went off near a mosque in the same area.
Three persons were killed and several others injured by the blast, police and rescue service officials said.The bomb was attached to a motorcycle that was parked in the area, police officials said.
Rescue workers collected body parts from the site. The dead and injured were taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.
Police and paramilitary personnel cordoned off the area while members of a bomb disposal squad conducted a search for more bombs.
The first bombing occurred half a kilometre away from the site of the second blast.
There was a gap of about 20 minutes between the blasts, police officials said.No group claimed responsibility for the attacks.
Sohrab Goth area is home to a large number of Afghan refugees and Pashtuns who have moved to Karachi from the northwestern Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province and tribal areas. Several reports have said that the Taliban have a strong presence in the area.
There have been a string of attacks on police and paramilitary forces in Sohrab Goth since last year.
A polio vaccinator was gunned down in the area last year.
Yesterday, suspected Taliban fighters attacked a police station in the area and took away two prisoners after killing a policeman.
