<p>Hotels, including restaurants and small eateries, are bulk generators of garbage producing over 1,500 tonnes every day. <br /><br /></p>.<p>To tackle the menace, Day 2 of ‘Wake Up Clean Up Bengaluru’ initiative on garbage management, had hotel representatives participating in a panel discussion.<br /><br />Among the initiatives taken for managing hotel waste was the one adopted by Gopinath Prabhu of New Krishna Bhavan in Malleswaram.<br /><br />Prabhu has been handling his hotel’s garbage and stopped giving away garbage to BBMP. Dry garbage including plastic bags, boxes and spoons, cardboard parcel covers are given away to scrap dealers. <br /><br />Pig feed<br /><br />The wet waste, 200 kg per day, mainly includes food waste. The vegetable waste is given away to piggery. Gopinath says coffee and tea dust is given for mixing it with manure for a park nearby. <br /><br />The ash generated in the kitchen is taken away by a manure manufacturing firm. <br /><br />“Ever since I began managing my garbage, I feel relieved and am earning Rs 119 a day by selling dry waste,” he added. Over 200 hotel representatives participated in the discussion.<br /><br />Pact shortly<br /><br />Bruhat Bangalore Hotels Association, Nobel Exchange Environment Solutions Pvt Ltd and BBMP will enter into a pact to set up a biogas plant to process wet waste generated by hotels. <br /><br />Hotel Association President Vasudeva Adiga said over 1,500 hotels were members of the association. <br /><br />He said the firm has come forward to generate biogas out of wet waste. Noble Exchange Regional Manager K S Girish Kumar said they have sought land from BBMP to set up biogas plants. <br /><br />“We are looking at four plants with a total capacity of 250 tonnes. We will take wet waste from hotels and use it for biogas plant and sell biogas to hotels. We plan to replicate our Pune experience in Bangalore,” he added.</p>
