Christians oppose Tipu varsity

Last Updated 07 February 2013, 19:12 IST

Christian organisations have threatened to go on protest if the Union government goes ahead with plans to name the new minority university after Tipu Sultan.

Around 25 members of various Catholic associations have come together to publicly condemn the choice.

The members, in a representation to the Governor, appealed that the university be named after Reverend Ferdinand Kittel, because of his immense contributions to Kannada literature.

Kittel, a missonary from Germany, arrived in Mangalore late in the 19th century. His most important literary work is his creation of a Kannada-English dictionary.
