Academicians had an opportunity to get unique lessons from a woman cop here on Thursday. It was deputy director of Karnataka Police Academy and Dy SP  Dharani Devi Malagatti, who delivered the valedictory address at the 98th orientation programme for assistant professors of colleges and universities by UGC-Academic Staff College, University of Mysore. She likened the jobs of police to that of  professors.

“They will be always under people’s  scanner and are blamed for any unfortunate happenings in society,” she added.

She mentioned about a programme called ‘tiger programme,’ introduced by a company for its marketing staff, which teaches them to behave as cats to sell the products, meanwhile not to forget to be tough as tigers in their persuasion by not to letting their sales down.

Pointing out the benefits of the orientation programmes, she said, there are researches to prove that such programmes are useful as well as they play key role in development of an individual which in turn assists progress of the organisation. Participating in such events should not be compulsion but a volunteer participation is needed. Malagatti refered to example of Ekalavya, who was a self-trained man. She said, self-training is more important.

Quoting Dr S Radhakrishnan’s words, she said, universities should not become museums and zoo producing just academicians without developing other necessary qualities among them. Value based education should be imparted she added, though imparting knowledge is main aim, creativity, humanity and other aspects should also have space.
Malagatti asked professors not to be stagnant, but be like a flowing water to learn more things from environment and others.

Ramesh Varangal of Andhra Pradesh who attended the programme, sharing his experiences in Kannada, said that the environment of the college and programme reminded him of his native. “All were friendly and I was treated one among them,” he added.

Director of UGC-Academic Staff College, University of Mysore Lingaraj Gandhi and course coordinator L Nanjundaswamy were present.
