While police officers usually carry pistols, Sheikh had got issued an AK-47 for himself on the day of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru’s execution on February 9, sources said.

Superintendent of police (SP) Handwara Aslam Chowdhary told Deccan Herald that a case has been registered and post-mortem has been conducted. “It seems accidental fire but actual cause will be known only after forensic science laboratory report comes,” he said.

During his 30 years of service in police department, Sheikh had remained posted in highly sensitive areas of the district. Sheikh is survived by his wife, four daughters and a son.
