Ginger is one of the most important ingredients in Indian cuisine. Boasting of many qualities, ginger is one herb which has loads of nutritional value and helps curb many diseases. It contains anti-viral, anti-toxic and anti-fungal properties and is commonly used as treatment.

Though commonly used for treating cough and cold, eating ginger is said to prevent cancer and some aging disorders too. It contains special enzymes responsible for catalysing proteins in the food, thus aiding in digestion and prevention of cramps. It is good for people suffering from constipation too.

Discomfort arising from infection in the upper respiratory tract can be relieved if one consumes some ginger, for it is known for its anti-bacterial properties.

According to Sachi Sohal, dietician with BLK Super Speciality Hospital, “Ginger is great for releasing pain, especially in migraine, since it helps in the flow of blood. This herb is also good for pregnant women who have morning sickness and nausea.” Ginger is also good for cold, cough and arthritis and is also beneficial when it comes to menstrual cramps.
Chewing on fresh ginger can help freshen one’s breath. Being a warming herb, ginger can help knock off a fever. “It can also help relax muscles around the blood vessels and is said to help prevent blood clots. The warming effects make it a natural decongestant as well as an antihistamine, making it the perfect remedy for colds,” adds Sachi.
Recent studies show that ginger might also have a role in lowering cholesterol because the spice can help reduce the amount of cholesterol that is absorbed. If you like it in your food, ginger is excellent in many dishes and perfect when combined with garlic. It contains Vitamin C, zinc and magnesium.
