Couple sentenced to life imprisonment for child sacrifice

A local court today sentenced a couple to life imprisonment for sacrificing a five-year old girl in January 2009 to get rid of their financial woes.

Additional District Judge Upendra Kumar passed the order after finding the couple guilty of murdering the minor girl.

Chandiyana village resident Prahlad and his wife Pushpa Devi were in a financially weak condition, police said.

According to police, the couple approached an occultist who advised them to offer a sacrifice to get rid of their financial problems.

Acting on the occultist's advice, they abducted the girl, who also belonged to the same village, and after killing her the couple buried the body in their house, police said.

On the information provided by the villagers, the police team took the duo in custody.

During interrogation, Prahlad and Pushpa admitted their involvement in the crime, they said adding, on the information provided by the couple, the minor's body was exhumed from their residence.
