Traffic cops to crack down on cars sans security registration plate

Last Updated 01 March 2013, 21:11 IST

If you bought a car after May 1, 2012 and have not got the high security number plate so far, it is time to face the music. From Saturday, Delhi traffic police have decided to crackdown on new cars not having the mandatory high security registration plate (HSRP).

Traffic police officials said they will start booking car owners following a public notice issued by the transport department on Saturday. “We have consulted the transport department over the issue. They will publish a public notice on Saturday,” said additional commissioner of police (traffic), Anil Shukla. “Traffic cops will start booking the violators thereafter.” The defaulters will be charged with violation of registration that entails a Rs 2,000 fine. Traffic police had planned similar drives in the past as well. But they had to defer such drives on the request of transport department officials. The transport department had set October 31, 2012 as the deadline for all car owners, who bought their vehicles after April 30, 2012, to get the secure number plates installed.

The department had also issued a notification ordering the car dealers to deliver vehicles only after getting the high security number plates affixed. The decision was taken to provide relief to prospective car owners.

Traffic officials said since the onus now lies on the car dealers, no car is expected to be plying on the city streets without the secure number plates.

However, the sources in the traffic police department said it will be difficult to identify the vehicles without HSRP as many car owners have got conventional number plates installed. “Some of the vehicles have temporary number plates fixed on them. The cops will have to be very alert in identifying vehicles which have been bought over the last few months, yet do not have secure number plates,” said a senior traffic police officer.

Around 100 vehicle owners have been booked for HSRP violation in the city since May 1.
