When on set, it is the best to be a director; when in office, its best to be a producer and when at home, its best to be a writer,” shares Goldie Behl who has donned all three hats but admits that ‘direction is his true love’.

Metrolife caught up with the man up, close and personal when he was recently in the City recently to promote his latest production I, Me, aur Main.

A true Mumbaikar, Goldie was born into a film family and saw the process of filmmaking through his producer-director father, Ramesh Behl. He ventured into the field for his love for writing was uncontrollable.

The result was his first film Bas Itna sa Khwab Hai which received appreciation but his next directorial venture, Drona, failed to make to a mark. “I realised through the failure of Drona how successful Bas... had been.

There was a whole generation who liked the movie and was looking at me as a prospective filmmaker. Its a cliche, but that film was ahead of its time and that is why today when you watch it on TV, it makes more sense to you. Drona on the contrary was slow and directorially I did not direct atleast Abhishek (Bachchan) upto the mark. I attempted to do something very different but the problem with the first step is, that it is stepped upon! Yet, a lot of filmmakers are glad that Drona was made because a lot of technical systems and processes were put into place for the following films.”

Having tasted both – success and failure, Goldie has realised that bygones have to be forgotten in order to start afresh. “You have to stop thinking of the past if you want to direct another film. In fact, it is the thought of failure that makes one consume a long time between two movies because one tries to protect it from failure but nothing can be full proof in our life!”he muses.

Meanwhile, Goldie is also enjoying the role of a producer as he gets to launch new directors such as Kapil Sharma of I, Me, aur Main. “Its fun being a creative producer. Working with young directors has helped me a lot. I try to get it right for them, more than I did it for myself,” says Goldie.

This excitement for filmmaking seems to be in his genes for his seven-year old son, Ranveer suggests that he make an action-packed masala film! “My son has has asked me to make one action masala film, with a lot of comedy. He has told me, “‘Papa I want a lot of fighting and lot of dancing and preferably it should be an animated film. It sounds like a recipe to success. May be I should listen to him,” Goldie chuckles.
