No progress on shifting statue

Last Updated 05 March 2013, 20:35 IST

It has been more than 10 days since the State government, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited and Dalit groups arrived at a consensus before the High Court on shifting the statue of Dr B R Ambedkar from the precincts of the Vidhana Soudha to facilitate Metro work. However, they are yet to fix the date for shifting the statue.

Sources in the State government told Deccan Herald that a meeting of the stakeholders which was to take place in the Vidhana Soudha on Tuesday could not be held as officials have not yet studied the High Court order.

“We are yet to decide on the date for shifting the statue. The meeting is postponed to Thursday,” said a senior official from the Public Works Department.

However, Dalit Sangarsha Samithi president N Murthy said that so far none of the Dalit leaders had received invitation from the State government for the stakeholders’ meeting.

Disposed

A division bench of the High Court comprising acting Chief Justice K Sreedhar Rao and Justice S Abdul Nazeer on February 25, 2013, disposed of petitions pertaining to shifting of the statue after all the stakeholders arrived at an amicable solution.

The State government has agreed to shift the statue to a location to be suggested by Dalit organisations. The statue, for the time being, has been lifted from its pedestal and is supported by belts. The statue sank by 19 mm some time ago, due to the impact of the underground station works.
