Mumbai, Mar 5=6, 2013, DHNS:

Nagpur, known as Maharashtra's winter capital, was on Tuesday shaken to the core by separate cases of sexual assaults on four school girls and a rape attempt on a young woman, all of which happened within a span of 24 hours.

In the first case in Shanti Nagar, teachers of Vinayakrao Deshmukh School were stunned early on Tuesday to hear a girl screaming .

On rushing to the spot, teachers found that a young adult in late teens or early twenties jumping the school compound wall. The victim later said she was sitting on a bench eating her breakfast when a young man came and dragged her to an isolated spot. He tried to gag her and when she started screaming, tried to assault her sexually.

According to Lakadganj police, the accused is a serial attacker as the description matches with that of accused in other rape and molestation cases reported in the region.

Later in the day, another schoolgirl from Seva Dal Mahavidyalaya, in Chakradhara Chowk, reported that she was sexually molested by an unidentified person.

At the dusk of the day, police took into custody 40-year-old Asif Shaikh for sexually abusing a 12-year-old girl in Kalamne village, 30 km from Nagpur city. Police said the accused had been sexually abusing the girl for the past eight to nine months, all the time threatening her with dire consequences.

In Nandanvan area, barely 25 km from Nagpur, two youths from Lakhundur taluk of Bhandara district, raped a 25 year old woman on Tuesday night.

The attackers stalked her while she was returning home from her work and then barged into her house and locked the door from inside. On hearing her screams, the neighbours broke open the door and caught the fleeing rapists. The two youths in their mid-twenties – Ganesh Nane and Nandu Ganorkar alias Ritesh – were handed over to the police after being thrashed.
