<p>A plumber who tried to fix a defective water pipe on the terrace of a house at Kempegowda Colony in Ganga Nagar accidentally fell to his death on Thursday morning.<br /><br /></p>.<p>Narayana Swamy, 45, a resident of Lakshmi Devamma Block nearby, had been earlier working as a construction labourer.<br /><br />On Thursday, Subhash, a resident of the colony, had called him to fix a defective water pipe on the terrace of his house. Swamy turned up heavily drunk and while climbing a ladder, he lost his balance and fell down. He sustained severe head injuries and was rushed to a nearby private hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.<br /><br />Fire at hospital basement<br /><br />A minor fire broke out in the basement of Manipal Hospital, located on Old Airport Road, on Thursday afternoon.<br /><br />The fire was first spotted at 1:45 pm where UPS batteries were stacked. The fire department got a call at 1:56 pm and soon two fire tenders were rushed to the spot and the fire doused before it could spread. <br /><br />It is learnt there were 130 UPS batteries of which 60 caught fire. <br />Manipal Hospital Head C G Muthanna, in a statement said: “A battery burn generated smoke in the basement (-2 floor) of the hospital. It was detected and contained immediately.”<br /><br />Cash stolen from car<br /><br />Miscreants smashed a car’s windshield parked on Modi Hospital Road in Basaveshwaranagar and decamped with a bag containing Rs 4.5 lakh in cash on Thursday.<br /><br />According to police sources, Dayanand, a civil contractor, had carried the money to make payment. Having parked his car at the Modi Hospital junction, he had visited a nearby hotel for a cup of coffee. Police suspect that it was the handiwork of persons known to Dayanand or those who kept a close watch on him. <br /><br />Ganja peddlers arrested<br /><br />Police have arrested three men from Odisha who were selling ganja to college students in the City.<br /><br />Acting on a tip-off, Subramanyapura police recently raided a house in Doddagowdana Palya and arrested Pramod Kumar Biswal, 23, Peetambara Rao, 43, and Sanjay Raut, 25, all natives of Biriha village in Balasur district, Odisha.<br /><br />Police also seized half kg ganja from them.Sources said three were working as cooks at houses where students from outside the State were staying. <br />They smuggled ganja from their village and sold them to students at exorbitant rates, police said.</p>
