Spotlighting on the different facets and nuances of women and the lives they lead, an eight-day European Union Film Festival, Celebrating Women, will kick off in the City on March 21.

The festival, being held on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of EU-India friendship, and as part of International Women’s Day, will see the screening of 24 interesting melange of movies narrating many engaging stories offering insights into their interesting, difficult and remarkable lives.

The eleven-city festival, which begins its cinematic sojourn in Coimbatore on Friday (March 8) and runs up to March 14, will travel to Bangalore, Pune, Chennai, Goa, Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Chandigarh and Jodhpur.

The curated choice of 24 celebrated films, each from a different EU member state, reflects the European unity in diversity through the central theme of women. The films, drawing upon different genres — humour, thriller, romance — and have amazing stories to tell, says Suchitra Film Society Secretary Anand Vardaraj.

Most of the films are award-winning and provide film enthusiasts an opportunity to appreciate and enjoy them. Among the ones to watch out for include the Estonian film ‘Graveyard Keeper’s Daughter’ by Katrin Laur, ‘Altipano’ by director-duo Peter Brosens and Jessica Woodworth from Belgium, Danish film ‘Applause’ by Martin Pieter Zandvliet, Italian film ‘The First Assignment’ by Giorgia Cecere, Swedish film ‘Beyond’ by Pernilla August and Iciar Bollain’s Spanish film ‘She Gave Him Her Eyes’, winner of 39 awards at various film festivals.

Incidentally, a conference titled, Time to Talk- on What Women don’t want, is being organised as a prelude to the film festival on March 17 at Suchitra Film Society. “We always talk about what women need, want, should get, but rarely talk about things that women don’t ever want. We want women to attend and discuss and hear about things that women from different walks of life don’t want,” says Vardaraj.

Besides Suchitra Film Society at Banashankari II Stage, the festival will also be held at Alliance Francaise on Miller’s Road and Bangalore International Centre in Domlur. Free passes can be obtained from any of the above-mentioned venues. Details can be had on phone numbers 26711785 (Suchitra Film Society)/9845055034 (Anand Vardaraj).
