A thanksgiving mass was organised here Tuesday to celebrate the inaugural address of the newly elected Pope Francis.

The mass was organised jointly by the BiCatholic shops Conference of India (CBCI) and the Delhi Catholic Archdiocese (DCA) at the Sacred Heart Cathedral here in central Delhi.

The participants included priests from Protestant as well as Catholic churches in the city and were led by the Vatican's Pro Nuncio in India, Archbishop Salvatore Pennacchio as well as several diplomats.

"The mass will continue for over an hour and will consist mainly of prayers... the archbishop will also address the audience as part of the felicitation," DCA director Dominic Emmanuel told IANS.

Argentina's Jorge Mario Bergoglio, 76, known as "Padre Jorge" among his faithful in Buenos Aires, was elected by cardinals from across the world as the new, 266th head of the Roman Catholic Church, following Pope Benedict's decision to stand down.
