The department of posts and ministry of communications and information technology (MCIT) in association with department of personnel and training (DoPT) launched electronic Indian postal order (eIPO) on Friday to enable Indian citizens living abroad to pay Right to Information (RTI) fee online.

According to the MCIT and department of posts (DoP) notification, this facility is available only to Indian citizens staying abroad who wish to seek information under the RTI Act.

“This is a facility to purchase an Indian postal order electronically by paying a fee online through e-Post Office portal. It can also be accessed through India Post website,” said the notification. “Debit and credit card of any bank powered by visa or master can be used for this purpose. All the requirements for filing an RTI application as well as other provisions such as eligibility, time limit and exemptions have to be met,” the notification added.

Since 2008, RTI activist Commodore Lokesh Batra (Retd) has been communicating with various government departments to launch such a facility for Indians staying abroad. “Today is a historic day for RTI (Your Right to Know). Indian citizens abroad can now file RTIs and participate in nation building,” he said.
