'Save DU campaign' takes on new course

Last Updated 01 April 2013, 20:43 IST

Students and teachers gathered outside Vishwavidyalaya Metro station on North Campus to start ‘Save DU campaign’, an initiative to reach out to public and create awareness on the issues involved in implementing the new four-year graduation from this academic session.

Signature campaign

A signature petition campaign addressed to Prime Minister was also started.
“We collected 750 signatures on the first day. The implementation of the new graduation format is being hurriedly done. The university is not doing an experiment on few handful of students, but this shift will effect thousands of students,” said Abha Dev Habib, who teaches Physics in Miranda House.

“If at all there is a need to change something, it should be done after elaborate discussions at the state and central government level and other stakeholders. Or else the quality of education will suffer.”

The students questioned the two weeks time given for creating a new syllabus for the four-year graduation structure.

“It takes at least a week for us to write a good tutorial. But the university asked teachers to create a new syllabus in two weeks,” said a third year Chemistry (H) student.

“The semester system makes us feel that we have not learned anything in these last two years. When will they get serious. They are playing with the future of so many students,”.

Halt implementation

The students are asking to halt the implementation of the new course.
“After few years of semester system, the administration figured out that it was a bad idea. That was also hurriedly implemented. We are still waiting for the reason for this graduation shift,” said another student.

“Just when the university is trying to come to terms with the semester system, they impose a new structure. I don’t understand as to what is the hurry?”
The students and teachers are planning for another public interaction at Central Secretariat Metro station soon.
