Old wells get a new lease of life

Last Updated 05 April 2013, 18:03 IST

Residents of Banavara town have become role models, as they got together and cleaned the well that was not in use for many years.

The residents have involved themselves in cleaning borewells that have remained defunct since several days. The centuries-old historical ‘Arasina bhavi’ in the town was quenching the thirst of the residents here.

But in recent days, the tank has been filled with silt and has become unusable.
Facing severe drought this year, the residents decided to clean the available water sources and make use of the same in future.

The 60 ft deep open well here has been cleared of silt, with the residents including men, women and children doing their bit to rejuvenate and preserve the water bodies of their villages.
