Last Updated 05 April 2013, 19:09 IST

In a novel initiative to energise and educate the public to get their names enrolled in the voters’ list, the Election Commission of India, as part of its voting awareness campaign, will deploy a paraglider/small aircraft in City to spread the ‘Enrol yourself in the voters’ list’ message from 8 am to 11 am and in afternoon as well on Saturday

.

Chief Electoral Officer Anil Kumar Jha will flag off the campaign. The move is aimed at encouraging eligible voters to enrol their names in the voters’ list by submitting their applications either online or in person at local offices of the assistant returning officer.

According to Jha, paragliders were first used during elections in Meghalaya earlier this year. “We thought of experimenting in Karnataka also,” he said. The services of Meghalaya Paramotors Association has been drafted for the initiative over the next two days.

Meanwhile, the final dates for enrolment in voters’ list ends Sunday midnight. “The offices will function during usual hours, till the end of day.

If required, we may extend the hours for citizens to submit their proof of residence, age, etc,” Jha said.

He further said that if a citizen has applied online and has to submit proof of address and age, he can do so at the nearest office, regardless of jurisdiction.

“If he is not keen on getting an acknowledgement, he can submit his proof of address and other allied documents at the nearest election officer’s office, regardless of constituency. We will forward the documents to respective officers for scrutiny,” he said.
