JEE cutoff may rise, say experts

Last Updated 07 April 2013, 21:23 IST

Experts feel that the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) for admission to engineering institutes held on Sunday was relatively easy, thus the cutoff is expected to be high.

JEE (main) is for candidates aspiring for admissions to BE, BTech and architecture courses at the National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), Delhi Technological University, and other centrally funded technical institutes (CFTIs).

JEE (main), formerly known as the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE), conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), has registered a record 14 lakh candidates for the 2013 exams.

“This is the highest ever registration for the test. This year the number has increased by nearly 2.8 lakh as compared to last year. In 2012, 11.2 lakh candidates registered for the exam,” a CBSE official said.

While the JEE main offline examination was held on Sunday, the online examination will take place between April 8 and 25.

“Paper-I had three sections, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics, with 30 questions in each section (one correct answer from four options),” said Ramesh Batlish from FIITJEE coaching institute.

“The marking scheme was +4 for a correct response and -1 for an incorrect response and no marks will be deducted if question remains unattempted. The test was held on an optical-reader sheet. The paper was relatively easy,” he added.

The results are scheduled to be declared on May 7. About 1.5 lakh will be selected to take up JEE (advance) exam scheduled for June 2.

“Currently, there are 9,647 undergraduate seats in 15 IITs, IT-BHU and ISM Dhanbad while the number of undergraduate seats in the 30 NITs of the country is 15,678, including the seats in the new ones,” the official said.

“For selection of students to NITs and CFTI, ranking will be given based on score of 60 per cent JEE main and 40 per cent normalisation score of board results,” the official added.

The JEE (advanced) will have two objective type papers. Each paper will comprise physics, chemistry and mathematics. Duration of each paper will be 3 hours.

“Question papers will be in both English and Hindi. Admissions to IITs will be based on the All India Rank in JEE (advanced) subject to the condition that such candidates are in the top 20 per cent of successful candidates of their boards in applicable categories,” the official added.

JEE (main) offline was held across 81 cities, including four cities abroad, namely Bahrain, Dubai, Riyadh and Muscat.
