Parents oppose fee hike, school bars students

Forty-two children of Army Public School, JC Nagar, have again been prevented from attending classes by the authorities as their parents are opposing a hike in school fees.

After a long battle, the matter saw a short period of resolution with the High Court directing private schools to take up such matters either with the State government or the court. The court had ruled that schools could not prevent children from attending schools, while resolving such issues.

“We have allowed students to write their exams and even given them their marks cards. However, in the new academic year, they will have to comply with school rules’, said Officer-in -Charge, M S Salunkey.

“This is a clear violation of law and amounts to contempt of court,” said J Melchior Celestine, a parent.

Around ten class VIII students of Chinmaya Vidyalaya, St John’s Road, were asked to take transfer certificate (TC) for securing low marks in their class exams, according to a complaint sent to Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KSCPCR) on Wednesday.

The complaint was sent by Convener, RTE Task Force, Nagasimha G Rao on behalf of parents of ten schoolchildren. A deadline of 2 pm on Wednesday was allegedly given to the children to get their TC’s.

“We have neither failed the students nor asked anyone to get their transfer certificates. All these are baseless rumours,” representatives of the school said.

The Child Rights Commission apparently asked the BEO of the area, to inquire into the matter on the same day. BEO, North-1, V Ramesh said: “The principal has said that no such thing happened. In case anything such as this does take place, we will take necessary action.”
