HC asks cop to clarify on 'Love Jihad'

Last Updated 26 October 2009, 19:03 IST

The court clearly expressed dissatisfaction over DGP Jacob Punnose’s “unclear and incomplete” report on Love Jihad wherein girls from other religious background are allegedly lured to marriage and converted to Islam. It was the court which asked the police to probe the reported attempt of Muslim youth to convert Hindu and Christian girls to Islam. Justice K T Sankaran gave the directive while rejecting the bail applications of two youths who had allegedly trapped two girls for conversion.

In his report, the DGP had stated that there was no evidence of any organisation called ‘Love Jihad’ or ‘Romeo Jihad’ undertaking forced conversions. However, he also said that there were some unconfirmed reports  that such activities were going on in the state.
It was this confusing remark that prompted Justice Sankaran to direct the DGP to produce by November 11 documents or reports on the basis of which he had prepared the report. Commenting on the court’s observation, Punnose said what he had submitted was only an interim report and that investigations were very much progressing in the right direction.
