IISc seeks OBC quota exemption for Ph D

Last Updated 26 October 2009, 19:58 IST

The exemption is sought on the basis of Section 4 (b) of the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Act, 2006, which states that institutes of excellence, research institutions and institutions of national and strategic importance are exempted from reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBC).

The decision to seek exemption of reservation was taken by the IISc Council in a meeting held recently. However, the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development has sought clarification on the proposal.

Currently, as many as eight central research institutes such as the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research and the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research are exempted from OBC quota implementation.
