No deviation from rules in awarding telecom licences: Raja
New Delhi, Oct 27, (PTI):

Under attack over allocation of spectrum, Telecom Minister A Raja on Tuesday said he had followed his predecessors and decisions were taken in consultation with the Prime Minister, based on the opinion of top law officers.

"I have been saying that issuance of licence and allotment of spectrum have been done in accordance with telecom regulator TRAI's recommendations, in consultation with the Prime Minister after clear approval of the Solicitor General of India who was appearing before the tribunal with connected cases," he told reporters here. CBI is probing allegations of irregularities in spectrum allocation and last week searched offices of DoT, prompting demand from opposition parties for Raja's resignation.

When asked about the allegations, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh told reporters on Sunday that these repartees are part of democracy but "that does not mean what the Opposition is saying is right." There is no question of any ambiguity or aberration of rules and the well established procedure of first come first serve policy has been adopted as envisaged in the 1999 Telecom Policy brought out by the then BJP-led government. "All my predecessors followed the same procedure so did I. So, in terms of legal rules and procedure followed, there is no deviation," he said.

Asked if he was victim of a telecom cartel, he said: "It was earlier believed that there should not be more operators so there was an implied stagnation or some sort of cartel.  I wanted to bring competition in accordance with (regulator) Trai norms... so the competition might have created some storm... let it be investigated." Raja has been facing a charge that he doled out spectrum cheaply to new players that may have caused huge loss to the exchequer and the CBI is investigating into it and last week searched offices of the Department of Telecom.

On the opposition's demand for his resignation in view of an ongoing investigation involving his ministry Raja said, "Where is the question of resignation... that question does not arise." Any procedural error by DoT officials, he said, will be in front of the investigating agency. "I should not comment or interfere in course of investigation," he added. Asked if the stake sale by companies like Unitech Wireless and Swan Telecom fuelled the controversy, he said: "These sales come under the FDI policy and CCEA had approved them.

Can the Supreme court cancel the tender awards...if it is proven that big irregularities were done ?..it is time to teach these corrupt people a lesson by making them lose heavily.

Just by taking the name of the PM does not absolve one of a wrong doing, in the bargain Mr. Raja is trying to drag in the office of the PM in the scam. It is very clear that a wrong has been done, and the worst part is it was done blatantly by removing an earlier telecom minister and replacing withe Mr Raja. In our country the powerful can get away with anything and they shamelessly put a brave front defending their wrongs and even a man of stature the head of the country is seen nodding to it just to keep a partner happy. Wish people at higher offices introspect and see if they are doing good to the country by defending such scams. You can make out from the expression on the face of the party spokesman that he is telling a blatant lie and he has no qualms in saying so and he feels proud of it also.

BOFORS CLOSED - TELECOM SCAN OPENS Why do we elect such people, who even after getting involved in such huge scams go scot free. There are so many people to protect them due to political reasons. These people buy votes and people have got used to getting money for votes. Thanks to TN now this technique is being tried in other parts of India too. Should we hang our heads in shame or continue with this and keep on electing these corrupt Why he should resign (DMK) pressurised the PM for getting portfolio of Telecom and surface transport ministry once again. In the ministry of A.Raja BSNL falls Making profit from 8000 Crores to 574 crores. He has not finalised the absorption issue of ITS in BSNL and MTNL. You can imigine the position of telecom sector when two state run PSUs being run by deputinist top management.

Ask PM these simple questions on MEGA TELECOM SCANDAL 2001 rates applied in the year 2007 - WHY First cum First serve basis – What was the hurry No of applicants restricted – WHY Submission/cut off date advanced – WHY Swan Telecom sold 45 per cent stake to the UAE-based Etisalat for Rs 4,100 crore ($900 million). This was Rs 2,450 crore more than what its promoters paid to acquire the licences in February 2008. Mr Raja Telecom Min is misleading Parliament on the issuance of new telecom licences at throw away prices costin the exchequer a whopping Rs 1,00,000 crore loss . Would any sensible minister justify this â€DMK wanted TELECOM and TRANSPORT Ministry in 2009 – WHY DMK has never bothered about ethics or morality in public life and so is Congress. So Expecting them to do a clean act will only be futile.
