Singers Vasundhara Das and Mir Mukhtiar Ali are all set to bring back music of the Sufi tradition.

They will present exquisite contemporary Sufi music to Bangalore’s audience at a
concert on May 5, 7 pm at Chowdaiah Memorial Hall.

This concert, which is a part of ‘The Shah Hussain Project’, and presented by Bhoomija trust, draws inspiration from the 16th century Sufi poetry of Shah Hussain, and is set to contemporary music.

The concert will also see the launch of an album titled ‘The Shah Hussain Project Volume 1’ that the two artistes have recorded together.

Vasundhara has broadened her scope as a musician over the years and is now a
composer for several upcoming films.

Her increasing love for Sufi ideology and writings led her to the discovery of
the 16th century Sufi mystic Shah Hussain.

Talking about the concert, Vasundhara says, “This is the City where the music for ‘The Shah Hussain Project Volume 1’ was born . We did the recording for the album here and thus the first show, which is very important for us, is scheduled here.”

Vasundhara feels that even though the music was sung in the 16th century,
it is very relevant to today’s time and the lyrics suits
the needs of the hour.

On being asked about this different stint, Vasundhara replies, “I’ve sung songs which reflect my moods, and for films and stages.”

She adds, “I’ve sung in bands and done solo performances. Sufi music has influenced the person I am, and I want to do this now, and thus the upcoming concert.”

Mir Mukhtiar, who vouches that the style of Sufi music is well maintained in the album. He says that it includes a mix of styles and Vasundhara has given life to it.

Talking about the relevance of the album and the concert, Mir Mukhtiar says, “It is the music of love and has notes that touch the heart.” He adds, “There are many themes explored in this album, which include those about the different shades of nights, the depth of the eyes and so on.”

Vasundhara comments about the album, “The music in the album comprises
the voice of Mukhtiarji and mine. And since there is a huge difference in our
voices the whole experience is bound to be different for the listener.”
