A series of checks on vehicles and raids by the South Division police since Wednesday night yielded goods and materials worth Rs six lakh, allegedly intended for distribution among voters in favour of a particular political party.
The Chamarajpet police, who were conducting random checks on vehicles at Mysore Road toll gate late on Wednesday night, recovered edible oil Rs two lakh from a car.
Police sources said car driver Jameel, 38, failed to produce relevant documents for the oil consignment. Moreover, pamphlets were found in the car asking Chamarajpet voters to vote for Zameer Ahmed of the JD(S).
Police seized the oil and took Jameel into custody.
The inspection of another car by the Chamarajpet police led to the discovery of sarees and vanity bags worth Rs 3.5 lakh. A total of 66 sarees and 18 vanity bags were confiscated from the car. The driver, Amit Mehta, has been taken into custody.
Acting on a tip-off that school bags were being stocked at a house in Valmiki Nagar, the Chamarajpet police raided the house on Thursday morning and seized 540 bags allegedly intended for distribution among voters.
Police sources revealed that the bags had the picture of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalitha and the emblem of the Tamil Nadu government.
Chamarajpet police have arrested Sateesh Kumar, the owner of the house.
