Nephew, 3 others sent to 4-day CBI custody

NEW DELHI, May 4, 2013, DHNS:

Vijay Singla, nephew of Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal, was on Saturday remanded to four days' CBI custody by a special court here to facilitate the probing agency in finding the source of the Rs 90-lakh bribe and pinpoint the actual beneficiaries.

Singla, son of Bansal’s sister, along with co-accused Sandip Goyal, Dharmendra Kumar and Vivek Kumar, was produced before special CBI judge Swarana Kanta Sharma. They are accused of being involved in a deal to ensure the elevation of Mahesh Kumar, member (staff), to the post of member (electrical), a plum position, in the Railway Board.
According to the CBI, a deal was finalised for the purpose for Rs 10 crore.

CBI had sought five-day police custody of the accused. The judge, however, granted four days' custodial interrogation.

“I am of the opinion that custodial interrogation is essential to not only find the source of the bribe amount but also the fact as to who are the actual beneficiaries and conspirators other than those already named in the FIR, if any. I, therefore, grant police custody remand for four days,” he said.
