State's performance a notch up in civil services exam
The highest rank the State had secured was 91 last year. However, the number of candidates with ranks within 100 has gone up this year. The 75th rank holder Yashas R and 77th rank holder Snehal Rayamane are from Karnataka.
Rajendra is presently in the Indian Railway Medical Service (IRMS) in Delhi. A graduate from Bapuji Medical College, Davangere, Rajendra said he nurtured had this dream from his childhood. “Like the story of every other student from a rural background, I had the dream without a clue as to how to go about it. My success was based on trial and error.” It is not just about studying and acquiring knowledge, but its about smartly applying it in the examination that makes the difference, he said.
Rajendra’s father works for Ramco Industries and his mother is a homemaker. He chose Medical Science and Zoology. He did not go for any coaching for Medical Science but attended “doubt-clearing sessions” in institutes for Zoology.
Snehal’s (rank 77) story is that of dogged perseverance. A former lecturer at Maharani’s college, she is the daughter of Prof Rayamane in the Geography Department of Bangalore University and Tarabai Waghmore, a government primary school teacher in the City. This is her seventh attempt at the civil services examination. She got through the examination in her sixth attempt last year with a rank of 789. Earlier, Snehal got through the KPSC exam as well. Currently, she is undergoing her training for Group ‘A’ Civil Services India Post and Telecommunication at Faridabad.
Suman D Pennekar, (rank 126) is another topper from the State. She had opted for Sociology and Kannada Literature. Hailing from Beedi village in Belgaum, she is a qualified Ayurvedic doctor. Speaking to Deccan Herald, Pennekar said she was preparing for the examination from 2009. Her husband has been her greatest support, she said. “My goal is to improve the situation in rural India as I have been in that situation myself,” he said.
Anoop A Shetty, who bagged the 140th rank, is from Karnataka and hails from a farmer’s family. Shetty, who hails from Punjalkatte in Belthangadi taluk in Dakshina Kannada, said he had not taken any coaching for the examination. He is currently pursuing his PhD in agriculture at G B Panth University at Uttarakhand. Shetty hopes to make it to the IPS.
