A 22-year-old man was murdered allegedly by his elder brother over a trivial issue at their house in Chandra Layout police station limits on Friday afternoon.
The deceased is Srikanth, a resident of Nanjarasappa Colony. Police claimed they arrested the suspect, Srinath, within an hour of the crime. He is said to be undergoing therapy for substance abuse.
On Friday at 6 am, the brothers quarrelled over a petty issue after their parents Govindaraju and Lakshmamma left for work.
At noon, Srikanth was working on a computer at his house with the headphones on, when Srinath sneaked into his room armed with a hammer. But Srikanth, engrossed with the computer, did not notice his brother approaching him with the hammer. Srinath struck his brother on his head and before he could react, he hit him again. Srikanth collapsed on the computer monitor and fell to the ground, police said.
Jayamma, a neighbour, told Deccan Herald: “I heard some noise and rushed inside. Srikanth was lying in a pool of blood with his skull almost open. I did not see Srinath and called up Govindaraju.”
“He went out of the house after attacking his brother. We traced him near Vijaynagar and arrested him within an hour. He claimed that he did not know what he had done. He told the police that he might have murdered his brother probably under stress,” said a police officer.
“Both my sons were not in good terms with each other. At times, they would pick quarrels and get into a scuffle,” Govindaraju said in his complaint. Govindaraju is an electrician and Lakshmamma a house-keeping staff at a firm on Magadi Road.
Natives of Mallenahalli in Madhugiri taluk, Tumkur district, they were staying in a rented house at Chandra Layout for the past 12 years, said the police.
Srinath, a school dropout, was addicted to drugs. As it adversely affected his mental health, his parents got him treated at Nimhans and later at a private clinic in Nagarabhavi. After de-addiction, he was suffering from withdrawal symptoms for the past two years.
Srikanth studied diploma at RES College in Peenya II Stage, but dropped out after a year. He went to Krishnapattanam in Nellore in Andhra Pradesh two years ago and was employed at the harbour.
He returned home last month for the Ugadi festival and decided to settle in Bangalore. He was in search of a job here, said his family members.
