Activists demand CBI enquiry into dalit's murder

Mumbai, May 5, 2013, DHNS:

Social activists in Nagpur on Sunday decided to press for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) enquiry into the abduction and murder of a dalit youth belonging to the Mehtar community (manual scavenger) by suspected upper-caste people. The victim was planning to marry a girl from Brahmin caste.

Last month, human rights groups had pushed for the registration of a case of abduction of Anil Khutel against the upper-caste people. Anil’s body was found on a train near Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh.

Anil, a resident of Subhash Nagar, behind Nagpur airport, while working as a sweeper, fell in love with a girl residing in the neighbourhood. Anil and the girl who belonged to Brahmin caste’ planned to tie the knot, but the girl’s father and brother strongly disapproved.
Late March Anil went missing and so did the suspects-Sukchain and Lalu.

The police strangely refused to register a missing case and even refused to interrogate the suspects after they surfaced in the colony.

The matter was taken up by activists and Harish Janorkar of Sanyunkt Dalit Atyachar Virodhi Sangharsh Samiti from Nagpur told Deccan Herald:“ The Nagpur Police right from the beginning has been evasive... we met police commissioner but except for lip-service till date nothing has moved.”

According to Janorkar, most attacks on the depressed sections of society rarely get highlighted in media and government officials just turn a blind eye to such atrocities.
