Peace kills terrorist impulse

Pagade
Kannada (U/A) ¬¬
Director: Purushottam
Cast: Vishwas Bharadwaj, Gamya, Dharma and others

Pagade, named after the ancient Indian game, is yet another gamble wannabe filmmakers and their actors take while dumping their wares on a clueless, guileless and hapless audience.

According to the sham called plot, Pakistani terrorists, after successfully carrying out an attack in Canada’s Ottawa in January 2011, decide to send a few of their dedicated and trained jihadists to India to kill Karnataka’s home minister. Sounds implausible? A police officer – it is not clear of what rank – tells the home minister that it is highly impossible to attack any minister in India and the terrorists would go after his son, while urging the minister to send the apple of his eye to the US, currently the safest place on earth!
Purushottam, who presented a fine tribute to the God Who Walks, the seer of Tumkur’s Siddaganga Mutt with Gnanajyoti Shri Siddaganga, cannot come to grips with a commercial entertainer alas! The film’s pace is painfully slow. Gowri Venkatesh’s frame composition and lighting, costume and make up all put the film in last century milieu. Neither Harshavardhan’s story nor Krish Joshi’s screenplay and dialogues do the film any good. Vishwas’ stilted delivery doesn’t help either.

Also, the actors doing cameos seem quite bored while the main cast has very little to do. Apart from Maataadu Mouna... Sagar Nagabhushan has precious little to offer while Kiran Bhat’s background score is atrocious. A convoluted climax involving Dharma (wonder why he chose to essay THIS role?) taking the predictable jingoistic route, Pagade loses even the professional’s interest. A classic case of neglect and hesitation getting a potentially decent potboiler to bite the dust, Pagade is best played in the balconies of old, roomy houses during summer.
