Aadhaar enrolment will be speeded up: Siddaramaiah

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday said the government will take measures to speed up the Aadhaar enrolment drive and the entire population of the State will be covered within one year.

Speaking to reporters after meeting Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) chairperson Nandan Nilekani at his home office Krishna, he said more enrolment centres will be opened across the State in the coming days to enable people to obtain Aadhaar numbers without hassles.

So far, about three crore people in the State have enrolled themselves under the project launched by the Union government.

Three districts

A pilot project to connect subsidy schemes of the Central and State governments to Aadhaar numbers has been taken up in the three districts of Mysore, Tumkur and Dharwad, he added.

Nilekani said about 50 per cent of the State’s population has been covered under the project and Aadhaar numbers have been issued to about 2.2 crore people.

There is a need to expedite the enrolment process by opening more centres. The enrolment agencies will be asked to focus on vulnerable sections of society, he added.

Sources said the decision has been taken to conduct mega camps in various parts of the State. Besides, Siddaramaiah said he will hold a video conference with deputy commissioners and chief executive officers of Zilla Panchayats on Monday to review the drinking water supply.

Direction

The DCs and CEOs have been already directed to take all necessary steps to ensure supply of drinking water to people and adequate funds have been released for the purpose, he added.

On the alleged irregularities in conducting gazette probationers’ examination in the Karnataka Public Service Commission, the chief minister said he has directed Advocate General Ravivarma Kumar to submit a detailed report on the issue.

Appropriate action will be taken based on the report, he added.
