The Bangalore Chamber of Industry and Commerce (BCIC) on Monday said it had instituted an award for best practice in effective management of solid waste for its member companies.

“We are doing this to encourage our members to effectively treat waste and have roped in Centre for Sustainable Development (CSD) as the knowledge partner,” BCIC president M Lakshminarayan said.

The recent garbage crisis exposed serious loopholes in the City administration and attracted adverse comments not only from people but, also from the High Court of Karnataka. Hence, the Chamber decided to contribute in its own way, he said.

“The CSD has developed a phased approach for this exercise. Based on the applications received, the CSD will further evaluate these companies and the jury will honour the most innovative model in managing solid waste,” he said.

The jury, which will give the award, is constituted under the chairmanship of C S Kedar, Additional Chief Secretary.

The Chamber was also actively involved in the recently concluded ‘Wake up Bangalore’ and ‘Clean Bangalore’ campaign launched by the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) in February, Lakshminarayan said.

Handbook

A press release issued here said the BCIC also intended to
publish a handbook listing out the best practices that the winners have adopted and share the same with member companies.
