The Karnataka State Tribal Research Institute in the city will recruit 50 to 100 anthropology students every year to conduct studies on the education, economics and health of tribals, besides their society and lifestyle, throughout the State.

The Institute was set up in Mysore in 2011. It is undertaking research, evaluation and training activities, besides organising seminars and producing documentaries.
The students will be recruited on contract basis for a salary of Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000 a month, through interviews by universities in the State. They will then be given training in the tasks they are expected to perform.

Field work

“The institute has already discussed the matter with the vice-chancellors of the University of Mysore and Karnatak University, Dharwad.

The universities have been requested to brief the final year students about the field work that they have to undertake at the village level. They will also work in hamlets where tribals live, besides interacting with those living in extreme backward areas,” Institute director T T Basavanagouda told Deccan Herald.

He said 20 students were working with the Institute in the field in the last one year.
The Institute’s initiative is part of the efforts by the Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs, which seeks to undertake research related to tribals effectively in co-operation with the universities in the states.

The ministry has told the state tribal research institutes that the contribution of the anthropology departments of the universities is key to research on tribals. The institutes have been advised that it would be optimum if anthropologists undertake genealogical studies of any caste, if it is to be included in the list of either Scheduled Castes or Scheduled Tribes.

Interested students of anthropology may send their applications to the office of the Institute director at # 1540, Anikethana Road, Kuvempunagar, Mysore. Call: 0821-2560274/75 for details.
