BBMP to plant 1.6 lakh saplings

With the arrival of monsoon, the forest division of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has decided to take up planting of saplings across Bangalore.

The chief conservator of forest (BBMP) Brijesh Kumar said the forest division has set a target of planting 1.6 lakh saplings this year in all the eight zones of the BBMP.

Besides, saplings will be planted in certain parks, gardens, periphery of playgrounds, lake bunds and along the fenced storm water drains across the City.

The forest division has also planned to open some tree parks. A detailed roadmap for the project will be prepared during the meeting of the environment committee.

Kumar said: “This year Rs 16 crore has been earmarked for the forest division. The money will be spent on planting saplings, maintenance of trees and forests within the BBMP limits and to form tree canopies.”

Last year, the Palike had planted 1.72 lakh saplings, Kumar said.
