Number crunching for a living

Statistics is the science of collecting, classifying, analyzing and interpreting numerical information.

Statistical analysis is used in different fields.  It is required in various government departments, industry, finance, market research, research and development, and all spheres which require analysis, estimates and planning.

Courses

Several universities offer postgraduate degrees and diplomas in statistics.  Statistics is also taught at special institutes, IITs, engineering colleges and polytechnics.  Among them, Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, is the premier institute for studies in statistics.  The institute has centers at Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad and New Delhi.

Employment

Statistics offers a wide field of employment opportunities in teaching, government service, industry, commerce, data processing, research and testing, and banks and insurance.  For government service, the Central Statistical Organization (CSO) and National Sample Survey Organization (NSSO) recruit statistical investigators to process statistical data.  Indian Statistical Service (ISS) has an annual examination conducted by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for which the eligibility is MSc in Statistics / Mathematics.  After qualifying as an ISS probationer, one starts as an assistant director in CSO. The CSO is the main controlling agency and other state level directorates of economics and statistics also come under its purview. Private companies employ statistics graduates and post graduates in various fields.  They are employed as analysists and developers of financial and statistical software.

Statistical commission

The National Statistical Commission (NSC) was constituted in the year 2005 for improving the country’s statistical system.  The commission would evolve and recommend national policies and priorities relating to the statistical system and formulate standard statistical concepts, definitions, classifications and methodologies in different areas in statistics and lay down national quality standards on core statistics.

Statistics day

Birth anniversary of renewed statistician P C Mahalanobis, June 28, is observed as national statistics day every year.

The data and analysis about the Indian economy, made available at www.statisticsofindia.com, addresses the broad requirements of corporate, executives, investors, and researchers.

The state directorate of economics and statistics has independent website in http://des@kar.nic.in. Some pointers to the available information in website include district wise data on daily / weekly / monthly / annual rainfall statistics, timely reporting of estimates of area of principal crops, and statistics of agricultural production in Karnataka.

It also contains crops estimation of fruits, vegetables and minor crops, annual season crops statistics, agricultural census and input surveys, collection of retail and whole sale prices, computation of index of industrial production, local body statistics, civil registration system, national sample survey, economic survey of state government and the state at a glance.
