Thandagundi bridge waiting for a disaster
Vehicular traffic is high on this road
Thandagundi bridge at Bethri near Virajpet is in a precarious condition. Since the bridge is on the Virajpet highway, the density of the vehicle plying on this bridge is high, the possible mishap will undoubtedly be a serious one.
The bridge was constructed by Public Works Department in 1996-97 and the heavy rains last year washed away one part of the bridge. The collapsed portion is caving off continuously and if the vehicles continue to ply in the same manner the bridge will completely collapse soon, cutting off connection between Virajpet-Bethri-Murnadu-Madikeri.
The villagers of this region have been requesting the officials to take action to repair the bridge but nothing has been done so far.
No signboard
The department has prohibited plying of vehicles on one side of the road temporarily but they have not even installed a ‘danger’ signboard here. Officials have informed that the bridge will either be repaired or another bridge will be built after the next budget but the residents say that till then plying on the same bridge will be a dangerous thing to do.
