Only 3 out of 150 families shift to gruel centre at Bettadakadu

As river Cauvery is overflowing at Bettadakadu near Nellihudikeri in Virajpet taluk, several families residing on the banks of the river has been shifted to gruel centre.

Over 150 families residing on the banks of river Cauvery face distress during monsoon.

Though a gruel centre has been opened at a anganwadi centre, only three families with 10 members have shifted to gruel centre. The remaining families refuse to shift to gruel centre.

Several familiesdo not possess title deeds for the houses constructed on the banks of river Cauvery. As a result, they fear of being clearing their houses, if they shift to the gruel centres.

“We will shift to new place only if we are given sites by the government. We have been residing here for the last 30 to 40 years,” said residents.

Nellihudikeri gram panchayat president Hakim said “we had promised of allotting sites to these residents. However, they refused to shift as they are demanding sites in and around the area where they are residing now.”

MLA Appachu Ranjan said “paisari land that had been encroached will be cleared and distributed among these residents who have been residing on the banks of river.”
He also promised to construct houses under Ashraya scheme in three acre land at Guddehosur. Rice, cereals have been supplied to the gruel centres.

In the meantime, heavy rainfall that lashed across the district receded on Friday.
Loss

Property worth Rs 378.88 lakh has been damaged in the rainfall that lashed across the district since June 1. Two persons have lost their lives in the rain. About 46 houses have been partially damaged, said AC G Prabhu.

Relief work

The district administration has released Rs 15 lakh to Madikeri, Rs 25 lakh to Virajpet and Rs 10 lakh to Somwarpet to take up relief work.

A helpline has been opened at Bhagamandala Naadakacheri to respond to the woes of the people. The residents can contact revenue inspector at 9902637971 in case of emergency.

In the last 24 hours, the district has received an average of 53.33 mm rainfall. This includes Madikeri—99.4 mm, Virajpet—20.05 mm and Somwarpet—40.55 mm.
