Take on folks in Beijing and Bangalore, Obama tells students
Washington, Nov 5 (IANS)

President Barack Obama has hit the road to push a new $4.35 billion grant programme to encourage American schools to develop internationally competitive standards to let its students take on ''folks in Beijing and Bangalore.''

President Barack Obama speaks at James C. Wright Middle School in Madison, Wisconsin on Wednesday. APThe "Race to the Top" fund is one of the largest federal investments in school reform in US history, Obama said on a trip to Wisconsin on Wednesday. It is being financed with money made available through the economic stimulus plan enacted in February.

"We're putting over $4 billion on the table ... but we're not just handing it out to states because they want it," Obama told an audience at a Wisconsin public charter school making it clear that the grants will go to only those "committed to real change in the way you educate your kids."

"So, a race to the top has begun in our schools, but the real competition will begin when states apply for the actual Race to the Top grants," he said outlining four key reform measures that will be used to help determine a state's eligibility for grant money.

"The first measure is whether a state is committed to setting higher standards and better assessments that prepare our children to succeed in the 21st century," Obama said noting that 48 US states are now working to develop internationally competitive standards.

"...Internationally competitive standards because these young people are going to be growing up in an international environment where they're competing not just against kids in Chicago or Los Angeles for jobs, but they're competing against folks in Beijing and Bangalore," he said.

Second, the state will need to demonstrate a commitment to policies designed to encourage the recruitment and retention of effective teachers and principals. Conversely, teachers that fail to adequately perform need to be removed, he said.

Third, it will need to design systems to measure student success. Finally, federal officials will examine whether a state is taking steps to overhaul its lowest-performing schools.

"We'll look at whether they're willing to remake a school from top to bottom, with new leaders and a new way of teaching," Obama said. The process of doing so may include replacing a school's staff or even closing a school and sending its students to a better one nearby, he noted.

We Indians are adapting western attitudes some which are wrong and this could be partly becoz of IT and we have made the way to International schools. We should not forget that we are what we are today is becoz of our old school system which is the best and it should not be replaced by other new systems.Good points from new system can be taken to update our old school system but we should not let it vanish.Look at Chinese,Koreans and Japanese they also have their own method of old schooling which is strong and US kids upgrade their skills by taking tutions from Chinese and Korean training centers.Bottom line is we should respect our schools and institutions.

In my view puting more money will only make US Education system worst. Indian Education system was the best untill now and it is changing to follow US education system. So what can we expect from it ?

School education out here in North America is pathetic. Lack of discipline, low standards and more important the school teachers do not show any interest or committment. To top it all the children have no text books to track. The environment is more accomodating for mediocre than the smart. In India the education is very ideally designed. In school it is all theory giving a strong base in maths and science. And in university contrary to what it should be it is still theory. A small correction should be made to make university education more industry aligned. We are the top and that is where we should be.

Well said Veda, and Vishwa. Indian system of schooling in old ways is very good. It will never be followed in USA. $4billion plus dollars as planned by Obama is a total waste. Education budget in USA is already very high. It should be cut. Make national level exams, and common grading as in India, and enforce it. Then system will improve, and not the way in which Obama spends the money.

Your Wrong! American Education budget is tiny! Especially compared to that spent on our worldly military force! Education gets less than 25 percent of the funding it should get. $4 billion is a welcome addition in America. Indian education sucks too! What is the percentage of educated people in India. HAHA right! So Indian education sucks in its own way right? Learn before you open your mouth. Have a nice day.

Its nice for Bangalore to be recognized internationally. The point here is about Americans being competetive in Science and Maths against Indians and Chinese. The higher education in US is much better. But the schooling upto 12th grade is of much higher grade in India relative to US education.
